🧟 Horror Couch Co-op: The Best Scary Games for Two

Published · list data as of

Being scared is better with someone next to you on the sofa. But which horror games actually let two people play on one screen? We went through all 1,275 games in our couch co-op compendium: 82 of them carry the horror theme. The list below shows the best-rated — and the numbers show why you will mostly be shooting zombies rather than tiptoeing through a haunted house.

First, what “horror” means here. The games database files horror as a theme, not a genre, and it is generous: 59 percent of the horror games in our compendium are shooters. Couch horror is mostly two people holding off a horde together — Left 4 Dead 2, Gears of War 3, Project Zomboid. Fighting games are left out of this list, because a horror theme there says little about how the game plays.

Second, horror co-op is story co-op. 82 percent of these games let you play the whole campaign together — against 53 percent across the entire compendium. And they are made for two: 59 of the 82 are two-player games. Horror on the sofa is less a party than an evening for two people who want to get through something together.

Third, and most striking: couch horror is a genre of the past. 62 of the 82 games came out between 2005 and 2019; since 2020 there have been six. That matches what we found about split-screen as a whole — and in horror, the co-op moved online, to games like Phasmophobia where everybody sits at their own screen.

If you want the quieter kind of fear, there are two good routes. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is haunted-house horror for the whole family, played by two on one picture. And the Dark Pictures Anthology — Man of Medan, Little Hope, House of Ashes — turns a horror film into a game two people steer together; its Movie Night mode lets a whole group pass one controller around. Whether you need split-screen or a shared picture at all is explained in couch co-op vs. split-screen.
