🧩 Couch Co-op Puzzle Games: The Best Brain-Teasers for Two

Published · list data as of

Puzzle co-op is the couch genre where talking is the actual gameplay: one of you sees the solution, the other has the controller in the right place. We went through all 1,276 games in our couch co-op compendium: 167 of them are puzzle games. The list below shows the best-rated, and the numbers show what makes this genre different.

First: puzzle co-op is holding up. 34 percent of these games came out in 2015 or later — across the whole compendium it is 29 percent. While split-screen as a whole quietly disappeared, studios kept building puzzle games for two, from Portal 2 to It Takes Two and Split Fiction.

Second: most of them share one picture. Only 37 percent split the screen, against 46 percent across all couch games — when you solve a puzzle together, you usually want to look at the same room. And they are built for pairs: 104 of the 167 are two-player games. Whether split-screen matters for you is covered in couch co-op vs. split-screen.

Third, the platform catch: the current consoles are thinly stocked. 17 of these games are listed for PlayStation 5 and 17 for Xbox Series X|S, against 60 for Nintendo Switch and 107 for PC. If puzzle co-op is what you want, the Switch and the PC have by far the deepest shelves. For more games in the spirit of the Hazelight titles, see games like It Takes Two.
