🎮 Which Console Is Best for Couch Co-op? We Counted

Published · updated · list data as of

„Which console should I buy if we want to play together on one sofa?“ is a question you can actually answer with numbers instead of opinions. So we counted every game in the database that supports split-screen, per platform — and then did the part most comparisons skip.

Raw counts first. The Nintendo Switch leads the current platforms with 265 split-screen games, ahead of the PlayStation 4 (242), Xbox One (212), PlayStation 5 (147) and Xbox Series X|S (128). On PC there are 1,074 — no console comes close, and that stays true whichever way you slice it.

But a raw count rewards whoever sold the most games, not whoever cares most about split-screen. The Switch has 19,076 games in the database; the Xbox Series X|S has 6,436. Of course the bigger catalogue wins. The fair question is what *share* of a platform's library lets two people play on one screen.

That flips the ranking, and it is uncomfortable. The Nintendo Switch — the family console, the one with two controllers in the box — has the lowest split-screen share of every current platform: 1.4 percent. The Xbox Series X|S leads at 2.0 percent, ahead of the PlayStation 4 (1.9) and the PlayStation 5 (1.6). Both statements about the Switch are true at once: most split-screen games in absolute terms, fewest in relative terms.

The real gap is not between today's consoles, though — it is between today and fifteen years ago. On the PlayStation 3, 8.9 percent of the library had split-screen. On the Xbox 360, 6.6 percent. Those are four to six times the rates of anything current. Whatever you buy now, you are buying into a generation where playing together on one screen is the exception.

So the practical answer: if you already own a current console, none of these differences are worth switching for — 1.4 against 2.0 percent is noise next to which games you actually want. If you are choosing fresh and split-screen is the point, a PC has more than all consoles together. And if you have an older console in a cupboard, it is a better couch machine than anything you can buy today. Every number here comes from the games database; whether split-screen is even what you need is a question we answer in couch co-op vs. split-screen.
